Back when I worked in retail with my dad, this was almost 10 years ago, I sold a pair of shitty old skis to a guy who wanted non-parabolic skis and these were the only pair we had. The skis were on sale and it hurt my potential commission–skis can net a salesman $20 bucks flat for a whole set up. I was working at 2% commission and got about $10 bucks for my trouble.
My dad took me aside and said “You know what? Don’t sweat it. You sold the oldest pair of skis in this place. This is like finding cash in the gutter.”
The Dodgers beat the Phillies tonight, 15-9. Their line-up featured Jamey Carroll, Ryan Theriot, Scott Podsednik and Brad Ausmus. It was also only the second game for recent call-up Jay Gibbons, who had his first at-bat in 3 years yesterday. Gibbons went 3 for 4 and hit a home run. For the icing on the cake, relief pitcher George Sherrill saw his first career plate appearance and walked.
The silver lining for the Phillies was Ross Gload, of all players. Gload had two home runs. They also had Domonic Brown hit his first career home run and the Phillies mounted a minor comeback in the 9th.
The Rockies also lost, 1-0, so the Dodgers now leap-frog into third place in the NL West, still 6.5 games out of the division title and 5 games back of the Giants for the Wild Card, but it’s somewhere. The Dodgers found money in the gutter today.
